SPONGE IRON
Waste heat boilers for DRI kilns
A rotary kiln making sponge iron throws out gas at the temperature it reduces the ore. More than a hundred of those kilns run our boilers.
Where the heat is
Direct reduced iron is made by reducing iron ore with non-coking coal in a rotary kiln at around 900 to 1,100 °C. The kiln exhaust leaves the after-burning chamber at close to that temperature, laden with dust and swinging with the kiln's operation. Every tonne of sponge iron carries this heat with it, and in a plant with a captive power station the kiln boiler is the main source of steam. The dolochar discharged with the product is a fuel in its own right, burned in an AFBC/CFBC boiler to add to the same turbine.
What the boiler has to do
- Take dusty gas at kiln temperature without choking
- Follow the kiln's swings in flow and temperature
- Fit the plant that exists: natural or forced circulation, inline or offset arrangement to suit the layout
- Vertical or horizontal water-tube construction with proven cleaning and dust removal
- Serve kilns of 1,250 TPD and above, on a turnkey basis with the extended balance of plant

What we supply
- Waste heat recovery boilers at the kiln exhaust
- AFBC boilers for dolochar and coal fines
- The complete captive power plant with turbine and balance of plant on EPC
- One partner from kiln to switchyard

Waste Heat Boilers For Dri Kilns
Direct reduced iron (DRI) is also known as sponge iron. It is produced by the reduction of iron ore by non- coking coal in a rotary kiln, thereby generating hot flue gases.
TSPL provides WHBs to recover heat from hot kiln gases, thereby generating HP Steam which is in turn used for generating power
