NITRIC ACID
Heat recovery in nitric acid production.
Burning ammonia is one of the hottest reactions in the fertiliser chain. The converter boiler behind it, and the economiser and start-up heater, keep the process on its temperature profile and raise the plant's steam.
Where the heat is
Weak nitric acid is made by oxidising ammonia with air over a catalyst, cooling and condensing the nitrous gases, and absorbing them in water. The oxidation is strongly exothermic and the converter outlet gas must follow a precise temperature profile through the heat recovery train. Converter boilers raise steam from the hottest section.
What the equipment has to do
- Match the licensor's temperature profile exactly, in vertical or horizontal plant arrangements
- Respect the corrosion chemistry of nitrous gas
- Fire-tube units with natural circulation
- Licensor-designed or custom-designed, arranged to suit the existing process and plant layout

What we supply
- Converter waste heat boilers / process gas coolers
- Superheaters
- Start-up heaters
- Economisers and associated equipment for weak nitric acid plants, new or revamped

Waste Heat Recovery Boilers
For Nitric Acid Production Plants
In weak nitric acid plants, ammonia oxidation is highly exothermic and the converter outlet gas must follow a precise temperature profile.
Thermal Systems designs and supplies converter boilers, WHBs and economisers with start-up heaters — fire tube construction with natural circulation — suited to licensor specifications and existing plant layouts.
