COKE OVEN & COKE DRY QUENCHING

Waste heat boilers for coke oven batteries and dry quenching.

Coke making burns the volatiles out of coal at 1,100 °C. Whether the plant vents that heat as flue gas or carries it out in red-hot coke, we recover it as high-pressure steam.

Where the heat is

In a non-recovery battery the volatile matter released from the coal burns inside the oven and the hot flue gas is the only energy product; it travels into waste heat boilers, in parallel with the battery, and raises steam for power. In a recovery battery the by-product gas is collected, and the heat leaves instead in the coke, which a coke quenching plant cools; the hot inert gas passes through a CDQ boiler before it returns to the chamber. Both routes deliver high-pressure, high-temperature steam that can carry a captive power plant.

What the boiler has to do

  • Non-recovery batteries: run in inline or offset configuration with the battery
  • Multi-pass single-drum design, able to keep operating while ovens are charged and pushed
  • CDQ: gas-tight construction for the closed nitrogen circuit
  • Availability first: the plant cannot stop for the boiler

What we supply

  • Waste heat boilers for non-recovery coke oven batteries
  • Waste heat boilers for coke dry quenching plants
  • Steam turbine and extended balance of plant on EPC where the plant wants power
  • Multiple boilers in service at integrated steel plants and merchant coke plants

  • Overbed & underbed firing for optimum combustion — converting industrial waste heat to power

Fossil-fuel and waste-heat based captive power plants on full EPC basis — waste heat to power, concept to commissioning.

Waste Heat Recovery Boilers

For Non Recovery Type Coke Oven Batteries

In Non-recovery coke plants, the carbonization process takes place in large oven chambers where Primary air for combustion is introduced into the oven chamber. Combusted gases / Waste Gas  exit through common tunnel is fed into a waste heat recovery boiler to convert waste heat into steam for power generation.

Since by-products are not recovered & Waste heat is converted to Steam, the process is called Non-Recovery / Heat Recovery Coke making.

Inline Configuration - Coke Oven Battery & WHBs

In the production of Low Ash Metallurgical Coke (LAMC), large quantities of heat is carried away by flue gases and the hot coke itself. We have successfully operating WH Boilers, Custom Built to suit the plant layouts & location of gas tapping

Offset Configuration - Coke Oven Battery & WHBs

In the production of Low Ash Metallurgical Coke (LAMC), large quantities of heat is carried away by flue gases and the hot coke itself. We have successfully operating WH Boilers, Custom Built to suit the plant layouts & location of gas tapping

Waste Heat Recovery Boilers

For Recovery Type Coke Oven Batteries / Coke Dry Quenching

In Dry Coke Quenching process, Red-hot coke at about 1,100°C is charged into the coke cooling tower, and inert gas normally Nitrogen is blown into the tower from the bottom.

Heat exchange takes place with the circulating inert gas. After the gas is heated to a high temperature at around 800°C, it is introduced to waste heat recovery boiler to generate steam.
