Introduction
Green petroleum coke from the refinery is heated in a rotary kiln to drive off volatiles and raise its density and conductivity. The kiln exhaust goes to an afterburner, where the volatiles burn, and leaves as a gas characterised by high temperature, swinging flow and abrasive dust. A waste heat boiler recovers that heat as steam for process use or for power generation, and in many calciners the boiler is the plant's only energy product beyond the coke itself.
